His father was 1888 Schuyler VanRensselaer (Manville) Sherman His mother was 1899 Bessie Ann Dutcher The photo at upper right was taken about 1941 - 1943. The photo at center right is probably his HS graduation photo, which would place it about 1948 or 1949. Schuyler's name was changed to "Paul Leo Sherman" when he was baptized a Catholic. His nickname was "Skyrocket" or "Sky". He was known for most of his life as "Paul". He contracted polio in August 1933 and it was feared he would not live. He spent months at Beech Tree Hospital in Ithaca, NY but eventually did beat the polio and came home. Editor's note: in her autobiography, Paul's mother, also my grandmother, Bessie Dutcher Sherman states that the hospital was in Elmira, however it may have been BeechTree Center in Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York, as that was a well-known center for the treatment of polio cases in New York state.
As a young man, he lived for a time with his cousin Lloyd Ward in a barn in Hancock near the train trestle. Paul entered the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and served eight years. The photo below right shows Paul in his U.S. Air Force uniform; at below left, he is sitting outside his barracks. When Paul came home on leave, he used to take his younger cousins Lila and Loren to the drive-in movies, where Paul would climb into the back seat and sleep while the kids watched the movie. He was married in 1966 to Glenda Lucia Flota Barbosa in Panales, Mexico. Paul met Glenda when visiting his mother Bessie at the school for girls where Bessie was a missionary and teacher. They had three children together: 1968 Patricia Ann Sherman 1971 Victor Lee Sherman 1973 Cecilia Ines Sherman Paul died as a result of injuries sustained when he fell off a drive-in movie screen that he was working on in upstate New York, near Albany, in the spring and summer of 1996. He was taken to the hospital in Albany, then was transferred to a V.A. hospital in Texas, where he died of his injuries after a couple of weeks. Here is a 12-minute video of Paul working on a drive-in movie screen in 1995 in Pennsylvania, about a year prior to his death. Here is an audio recording of Paul singing religious music; the year is unknown but is believed to the in the 1990's. And if you like funny true stories...here is a good one
