Here is some information received from daughter Yvonne:
"My mother went to work as a 'hired girl' after her freshman year
of high school. She went to live with Charles and Eva Scudder in
North Sanford (NY). They had a general store there and needed
help with the household. The couple had no children and my mother
was like a daughter for them. I have a picture of her outside of
their house in North Sanford. The relationship lasted throughout
the rest of their lives. We knew Eva as "Aunt Eva". The couple
had moved back to Albany by the time I arrived. I can remember my
mother and I going by train to Albany to visit Eva. Growing up we
made trips to visit the brownstone on Jay Street where she lived."
Leta later worked at the Bendix Scintilla plant in Sidney, New York
during the early war years, before she moved to Biloxi, MS to be
with husband Ralph, who was in the Army Air Corps there.
Here is a photo of their four daughters,
(L to R) - Yvonne (Vonnie), Mary, Carol, and Betty.
