Mrs. Clarissa Clemens
Mohawk, Sept. 28 -- The death of Mrs. Clarissa S. Clemens, wife of
the late Isaac Clemens, occurred last night at her home on the
Shoemaker Hill Road after a long illness.
Mrs. Clemens was a daughter of the late Caleb Sweet and Mary Piper
of Boonville, where she was born Jan. 9, 1836 and is in her 93rd year.
Her father was a direct descendant of the bonesetter Sweet that first
settled in Rhode Island.
Her marriage to Isaac Clemens took place July 3, 1852. For more than
50 years she had resided in her present home.
Mrs. Clemens was a member of the Universalist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Bessie Dutcher of Bainbridge, NY,
Mrs. Etta Filleau of Brooklyn and Mrs. Louis (Lewis) Eckhart (of Mohawk),
with whom she made her home.
There also survive three brothers, Frank Sweet of Syracuse, Rutger
Sweet of Ilion and Douglas Sweet of Detroit; and two sisters, Mrs.
Jerry O'Leary and Mrs. Louise Cambell [sic] of Patchogue; five grand-
children and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held from the home Sunday afternoon at 2
o'clock, the Rev. W. H. Skeels of Herkimer Universalist Church
officiating. Interment will be in the Mohawk Cemetery.
